NORTH DRAMA CD: "The Gast Incident"

Ren: “The Gast Incident—”

Gast has been acting strangely.

Marion Victor: Huh?

Ren: I said, Gast has been acting strangely.

Victor: What do you mean by that, exactly?

Ren: He hasn't been one bit irritating today.

Marion: Hah? “Not irritating?” That's why you reached out to us during patrol?

Ren: Yeah.

Victor: Why don’t we calm down and think this over, Marion? Does the fact that he went out of his way to report that to us itself not suggest that something is amiss?

What he said might not mean much on its own, but considering it’s Gast we’re discussing…

Marion: Oh, it’s Gast.

Gast: Ah, Marion…

Huh, and you two… Y’were all together, huh…

Marion: Ah! Just so you know, we weren’t planning on a cute little walk together for today’s patrol or anything! Don’t get any weird ideas!

Gast: Ah… ‘kay. I’m gonna check out what’s goin’ on over there…

Marion: ?! What the hell was that…?! He wasn’t irritating at all! There has to be something wrong with him!

Ren: That’s why I said he was acting strangely…

Victor: He certainly is acting odd. Were he the usual Gast, he would first grow suspicious and inquire as to why we are all gathered as one.

After that, he’d take advantage of the situation and suggest we all patrol together.

Ren: Yep. And then Marion would probably go “like hell we’re doing that!”.

Victor: Just what could be the matter? I’m a bit curious.

Marion: Didn’t his hair also look a bit off?

Ren Victor: Huh?

Marion: Even though he wastes his time every morning putting together that ridiculous hairdo, his hair looked pretty unkempt today. Isn’t that strange?

Victor: So that piqued your interest…

Ren: I didn’t notice. Not like it matters.

Marion: Huh?!

Victor: Marion always pays surprisingly close attention to the people around him. Very well, let’s keep that in mind.

Marion: Oi, don’t think I’m letting that fly—

Victor: Just what could’ve happened to him… do you have any ideas, Ren?

Ren: No… I’m pretty sure he was acting normal yesterday, though. He was blabbering about his day before bed like usual…

But when he woke me up this morning, he was already acting kind of strange, I think.

Victor: I see… Then we can assume something must’ve happened sometime last night.

There’s a possibility his behavior is due to the influence of substance.

A couple of days ago, the rookies from East Sector came into contact with a level one substance, and had their personalities changed as a result.1

That substance had the power to turn a positive disposition into a negative one, and vice versa…

Ren: And a substance like that could’ve made Gast stop being annoying?

Victor: I don’t believe he could be inflicted with the same substance—we’ve already recovered that one, after all.

A substance that causes something irritating to not be irritating anymore is a possibility, but I’m not sure about any of the particulars… How very interesting indeed.

Marion: But that’s just a “possibility”, right? Something other than substance could’ve caused it too.

Victor: For instance…?

Marion: He could’ve fallen down the stairs and hit his head, or had his body taken over by aliens, or been abducted a UFO…

Victor: Maybe you’ve been watching too many movies recently… All of those are much too unrealistic, and quite a massive leap of logic.

Marion: Huh?!

Victor: Well, I’m not completely sold on my own theory either. However, we’ll get nowhere if we do nothing but pass speculations back and forth.

We’ll require a bit more information before we reach any conclusions.

Ren: So? What should we do?

Victor: Let me think… For now, why don’t we just observe him for a little while?

───

Victor: Hmm… he seems to be going through his patrol with utmost diligence.

Ren: It looks like he’s just waddling around to me.

Victor: Well, that can’t be helped when the patrol is so uneventful, can it?

Marion: Hey… doesn’t he look really unsteady? With all that staggering… he looks pretty disoriented.

Ren: …! He isn’t drunk or something, is he?

Marion: What?!

Victor: That is a possibility.

I’m not aware of Gast having a fancy for alcohol, but intoxication could certainly explain his behavior.

Marion: He’d do that and still have the gall to face all the citizens, in uniform and everything?!

Victor: It’s just another possibility for now. Let’s just keep a close eye on him from here—

Marion: God, I’m sick of this!

Why do I have to sneak around for that guy’s sake?!

Ren: H-Hey, Marion… he’s gonna notice us.

Marion: I don’t care! I feel stupid wasting my time like this. If we want to know why, we should just ask the guy himself!

Ren: Ah…

Marion: Oi, Gast!

Gast: Uh, Marion…? Woah…!

Marion: I don’t… smell any alcohol. So then why are you wobbling around like that?!

Gast: Um… Marion? Y’ should stay away from me right now…

Marion: What?! Speak up, would you! Just what’s the matter with you?! What happened to your usual babbling?!

Gast: Ah… well, today ‘m just, um…

Marion: Hurry up and start babbling already!

Gast: Huh…?

Marion: Get on with your usual stupid, pointless blabbering!

Gast: Woah…! Hey, d-dun shake me so much—

(Gast groaning)
Marion: What’s wrong with you?! Start blabbering already!

Gast: Urgh, m-my head…

Marion: Huh?

(Gast falls over)

Marion: Woah…! What’s wrong? Steady, pull yourself together, Gast!

───

Victor: Hmm… his fever has gone down quite a bit…

Gast: Doc…?

Victor: Ah, did I wake you? My apologies. I was just taking your temperature.

Gast: My temp…?

… Where are we…?

Victor: We’re in the tower’s infirmary right now.

You collapsed during our patrol, so we carried you back. Do you not remember?

I took the liberty of investigating while you were resting, but you seem to have nothing more than your everyday cold.

You aren’t inflicted by any substance, nor were you abducted by any aliens or UFOs.

Gast: Aliens…? UFOs…?

Victor: Thankfully, Marion’s short temper worked to our benefit this time around, but why did you keep quiet about your poor condition?

Gast: Ah… I thought it wasn’t a big deal or anythin’, so I’d just keep an eye on myself…

Victor: It “wasn’t a big deal”? Even though you didn’t even have the energy to speak…?

Gast: So… how’d I end up here?

Y’ said I passed out or whatever, right…? I don’t really remember anythin’ that happened after Marion called out to me and grabbed my collar…

Victor: Well—

Marion: You had the nerve to collapse on me. Really, all your weight with not a single shred of consideration…

Gast: Huh, Marion and Ren…?

Ren: You’re lucky that Marion was the one in front of you when you fell. I doubt there are a lot of people capable of supporting your weight.

Marion: And just what do you mean by that, Ren?

Gast: S-Sorry ‘bout that, Marion. And… thanks.

Shouldja guys even be here? I’d hate to get ya sick…

Marion: I’ll be just fine. There’s no way a cold you caught could get me sick.

Victor: What kind of reasoning is that?

Marion: Oh, shut your trap.

Gast: I’m the most worried ‘bout Ren catchin’ it. Sure you’re doin’ alright?

Ren: I’m doing just fine. I doubt I’d catch it either.

Gast: Haha, oh you…

Welp. I’ll stay here until I’ve completely recovered, so you guys don’t gotta worry one bit, ‘kay?

Ren: ……

Gast: What’s wrong, Ren?

Ren: I got you a sports drink. I’ll leave it here.

If you need anything else, just text me.

Gast: W-What’s the matter, Ren? Yer not the type to say that kinda stuff…

Ren: …I know I owe you one.

Gast: Owe me…? Are ya talkin’ about when ya caught a cold and slept in? Haha, I thought ya already forgot ‘bout that.

‘Sides, I forgot all about that till just now, too.

Ren: I just wanted to repay you. That’s all.

Gast: Ah, Ren! Wait a sec…!

Make sure ya don’t sleep in tomorrow, ‘kay?

Ren: … You…

Victor: Hehe, should I wake you up instead?

Ren: There’s no need for that. I’ll… get up on my own tomorrow.

Gast: Well, he sure doesn’t seem confident. Will he be okay?

Marion: Like you’ve got the time to be worried about other people.

Good grief… Victor, hurry up and jab him with something that’ll put him to sleep.

Gast: W-Wait, don’t do that…! I can sleep on my own…!

Marion: Hmph… I suppose I should add something about maintaining one’s health to the omertà2.

Victor: Fufu, the two of them must've went out of their way to drop by after their training.

Gast: Huh?

Victor: Ren was the one who brought our attention to your unusual behavior, and Marion was quite alarmed when you collapsed on him.

Gast: T-That so… huh.

Victor: You'd best recover quickly, to put them at ease.

I'll be taking my leave now.

Gast: Ah, got it. I owe ya a bunch, Doc. G'night.

Victor: Good night, Gast. Sweet dreams.

───

Gast: Sorry for worryin’ ya guys! Thanks to you, I've completely recovered! Voltage Max!

Juuust kiddin’! I feel great, I can hardly believe I was sick! It's gotta be because ya were all so kind to me!

Ya guys are usually so cold, but I got a lot more confidence in this team now! It feels like we actually have a chance here!3

Victor: Well then, I'll take this route for my patrol today.

Marion: Then I'll take a route that won't run into yours.

Ren: I'll head that way… no, this way.

Gast: H-Huh? Hey, guuuys?! Ya guys see me, right?

Well that's strange… I don't think I dreamed all that up…

Wait, ya gotta be kiddin’ me! Doc?! Marion?! Ren?!?! Why can't ya guys be that nice to the regular me…?!

1.This is a reference to East's Drama CD, which includes a part where Gray and Billy switch personalities.

2. Marion says 血の掟 here, which means omertà, an Italian code of silence and loyalty in the face of the law. In other translations, it's referred to as his "blood rules" (which is the literal meaning of 血の掟), and are the Spartan rules Marion enforces on his rookies (and others).

3. Gast literally says that the team "isn't something to be thrown away". This wording seems very intentional, given later developments...
